Kherto Ahmed, Darren Aning, PK Boateng, Jumoke Jimoh, Tesfai Mengesha, Presilla Mason & Sam Tecle

Kherto Ahmed is a past mentee, volunteer, mentor in 2016 and 2017 and recreational staff this year. She graduated from Westview Centennial Secondary School in 2017 and is currently studying Life Sciences at McMaster University. As an SBL Youth Researcher, Kherto is interested in gaining new research skills and interview skills. Being able to bolster her resume and help with her profile as she pursues a career in medicine. Kherto is also looking forward to catching up with other mentors from her cohort as well as her own mentors when she was a mentee. She is also interested in building new relationships and having fun with the SBL family!

Darren Aning was a mentor in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He graduated from Westview Centennial Secondary and is currently in his first year of study at York University. He is studying Psychology with a Minor in English and is enrolled in the Concurrent Teacher Education Program.

PK Boateng has had a long successful continuous stint within the SBL Program, where he took on responsibilities as a volunteer and a mentor. After graduating from Westview Centennial Secondary School in 2015, he went on to achieve a diploma at Humber College's Health and Fitness Program. Currently, PK is back at Humber College studying under the Pharmacy Technician Program.

Jumoke Jimoh was a mentee in the SBL Program in 2013, a volunteer in 2014 and a mentor in 2017 graduated from Westview in that same year. She is currently in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Joint Program at York University and Seneca. As a Youth Researcher, Jumoke is most looking forward to learning new skills about research and being able to apply what she learns working on this project to her nursing studies and other aspects of her life. Jumoke is also looking forward to working with SBL again and reconnecting with past mentors and hearing their stories and journeys after high school.

Presila Mason graduated from Westview Centennial Secondary in 2017 and was a
mentor in the SBL program in 2016 and 2017. Presila is currently studying Criminology at Brock University with a minor in Political Science. As a Youth Researcher on this project, Presila is most excited to gain research skills, the opportunity to connect with previous mentors as well as with SBL Core Staff. She is especially looking forward to connecting with previous mentors, as well as people who were mentors when she was a mentee.

Sam Tecle is a Ph.D. candidate in the Sociology Department at York University. His areas of focus include Black and Diaspora Studies, Urban Studies, and Sociology of Education. He is currently completing his dissertation which focuses on experiences and perspectives relating to blackness and Black identification of East African Diasporas across the UK, Canada and the US. Sam has held fellowships at both Harvard University and Northwestern University in their respective African & African-American Studies Departments; he was awarded the prestigious Canada Graduate Scholar Award by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Sam was one of the researchers of the well received "Towards Race Equity in Education: The Schooling of Black Students in the Greater Toronto Area." Sam is co-chair of York University’s Black Graduate Students Collective (BGSC), which works towards better experiences of Black graduate students at York University. Currently,  he is also a researcher at Success Beyond Limits, a community-based organization in the Jane and Finch community in Toronto.
